Vienna’s English Theatre

by Elena Schöber

Would you like to see a theatre play, but your German just does not suffice for the grand plays at Burgtheater?

Go and visit Vienna’s English Theatre.

Originally it was founded to entertain international tourists during the summer months, but soon it became a widely accepted national cultural institution, hosting a lot of international stars on stage such as Joan Fontaine, Anthony Quinn and Princess Grace of Monaco. The theatre, which opened its doors in 1963 has added French plays (Théâtre Français de Vienne) as well as Italian ones (Teatro Italiano di Vienna) over time.

To honor Tennessee William’s 100th anniversary the next play which will be performed is “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” starting on January 31st.

Contact: Josefsgasse 12, A-1080 Vienna, +43 1 402 12 60-0, tickets@englishtheatre.at

How to get there: U2 stop Rathausplatz, U2/U3 stop Volkstheater, 5 minutes walk

Combine your literary evening with a bite to eat? Check out Taverna O Christos, a traditional Greek restaurant just around the corner from the theatre: http://www.tavernachristos.at/ and read Boutiquehotel Stadthalle’s restaurant review in our blog.
