Vienna is the most livable city of the world

by Elena Schöber

According to the annual study of the consulting firm Mercer, Vienna is the city with the highest quality of living worldwide for the 9th time in a row now! We will reveal what exactly makes the Austrian capital so livable:

Criteria of the Mercer study

For its survey, the company Mercer has evaluated more than 450 cities and included altogether 231 metropolises in its ranking in the end. The annual Mercer study is considered to be the most comprehensive in its domain and it rates the quality of living of numerous cities worldwide on the basis of 39 criteria from ten different categories. They are grounded on aspects which play a leading part in the everyday life of expatriate employees. First of all, the political, economical and social environments are determining, of course, and associated with that category criteria like bank services, criminality and stability. Moreover, socio-cultural viewpoints like personal freedom and censorship are integrated into the evaluation. But also medical care and effects on health, for instance caused by air quality and waste disposal, contribute significantly to the quality of living in a city. Aside from that, educational standard, infrastructure and transport possibilities as well as public services flow in the ranking. Additionally, Mercer analyses the recreational factors and the leisure facilities of a city, the availability of consumer goods, the housing situation and the natural environment including climate and natural catastrophes.

At the same time, Vienna possesses an excellently built out traffic system, the public means of transport are affordable and the inner city can be explored conveniently by foot.
