In the course of our blog series “sustainably en route in Vienna”, we have already revealed how you best discover Austria’s capital city, where you will find natural cosmetic products here and where you can feast deliciously and vegan. Today we would like to show you that Vienna is not only a green city because of its stunning parks and forests, but also thanks to its urban farms, comunal patches and herbage manufactures:

The City Farm is the biggest centre of competence for garden pedagogics in Austria. On overall 4.000 square metres, vegetable- and flower beds are grown and even honey is produced here. In different workshops and guided tours, every aspiring gardener can learn more about plant breeding and even taste fancy vegetable rarities. The urban adventure garden also offers an own garden for children to enthuse already the youngest for the diversity of the flora. As unfortunately the location of the City Farm in Schönbrunn has been cancelled, it relies on your support to resettle to the Wiener Augarten.

With Karls Garten, Vienna has gained its first display- and research garden for urban agriculture. In the middle of the Karlsplatz on an overall area of 2.000 square metres, vegetables, fruits and grain is grown ecologically for experimental and educational purposes in the sectors of landscape conservation and woodwork. Apprentices get the possibility to try out their knowledge playfully in practice and thereby acquire new experiences here. Moreover, useful tips are presented which will help hobby gardeners to cultivate their vegetables even on a limited space in a major city. Raised beds, crate towers, bottle walls and pallet furniture are impressive examples which prove that you do not have to resign on gardening even in a metropolis, if you just let your creativity run free.

In the manufacture “Henzls Ernte”, edible wild herbs, fruits and vegetable from the own picking are processed and sold according to their seasonal availability. The aim is to open up and make use of unexploited nourishment potentials far away from industrial mass production. You can for instance purchase jams, pickles, chutneys, sauces, pestos, seasoning salts and much more here. Those of you would like to discover the diversity of vegetation in your environment yourself, could participate in a wild vegetable hike. The hereby gathered pickings will be processed and eaten together afterwards.
