Spring fever in Vienna

by Elena Schöber

When the days grow warmer and the evenings longer, when the first flowers blossom and the winter coat can go back to its place in the cellar – spring is here! We feel lighter, are more enterprising and more active. This is the perfect time to escape from the everyday life and explore a new city. In the low season, Vienna can be explored without long waiting lines in front of attractions as it is in the summer months.

Pure nature – Vienna in spring

When the first sunrays of spring grass little by little the city, the metropolis unfolds its irresistible charm. The numerous parks and gardens offer everything from lovely compiled rose gardens to unadulterated forests. Besides the Volksgarten and the Stadtpark in the centre of the city, Vienna offers the famous Prater and the gardens at the Castles Schönbrunn and Belvedere. Just outside the city, nature lovers can enjoy more parks, just as the Lainzer Tiergarten or the Kurpark Oberlaa. Even for enthusiastic hikers, Vienna has something to offer: the Wienerwald nearby the city can be reached easily with public transport and offers the opportunity for a spontaneous hiking trip in a beautiful scenery.

There is a lot going on in Vienna in spring!

Not only nature changes when spring arrives, there is more activity on the streets as well. The stands on the weekly markets open up, the cafés and restaurants open their Schanigärten (terraces) and the ice-cream parlours their doors. The particularly popular Steiermarkdorf takes place yearly in April on Vienna’s Rathausplatz (town hall square). The Styrian hosts will spoil visitors with Styrian delicacies and traditional activities. The Ramsau-Kletterturm (Ramsau climbing tower) offers a great view of the town hall. In May, another reoccurring event takes place on the Rathausplatz. The “Vienna Festival” celebrate its opening and invite visitors for a concert and dance to modern brass and folk music. This year there are going to be five bands from all over the world, a choir and the famous Austrian puppet show artist Nikolaus Habjan.

After a day in the beautiful spring sun, the evening should be a highlight, too. Vienna is known to be a city of art and culture which is why there are a lot of cultural events happening in Vienna during all seasons of the year. Last minute travellers will even get their fill in March: visit the Chinese National Circus with its new program, let yourself be bewitched by the Ehrlich Brothers or listen to Annett Louisan’s soft voice.

A great city trip includes also a restful sleep and a good breakfast to be able to enjoy the day to its fullest.
