Pop Art with Liechtenstein and Ramos

by Elena Schöber

Pop Art – born in the 1950s, successful and leading in the 1960s, resurrected in the 1990s – is coming to Vienna. The Albertina museum will exhibit the works of the most famous Pop Art artists Roy Liechtenstein “Black & White” and Mel Ramous “Girls, Candies and Comics”.

Pop Art was developed in the United States and in Great Britain simultaneously and came to be the leading art genre in the 1960s. Its works portray motives of the everyday life, the world of consumption, advertisement and the mass media. Most important is that the objects are real and easily recognizable. While consumption was glamorized in Pop Art in the 60s it is nowadays also often criticized.

The elements of Pop Art, mostly drawings, paintings and sculptures, are shown in this exhibition, ranging from a pair of sneakers to comics.

If you are interested, visit the Albertina museum.

The Roy Liechtenstein exhibition will be available from the 28th of January until the 15th of May 2011. The Mel Ramous exhibition will start on the 18th of February and will be open until the 29th of May 2011.

The museum is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm. On Wednesday from 10 am to 9 pm.

Prices: adults: € 9.50, senior citizens 8€, students € 7.00, children and teenagers under 19 years: free admission.
