The Vienna Life Ball

by Elena Schöber

This Saturday, May 21st, the Life Ball 2011 will take place in Vienna. “Spread the Wings of Tolerance” is this year’s theme, trying to illustrate the invisibility of the HI Virus, as well as of air. Air is one of the 4 elements that have been part of each year’s theme at the life ball.

The event takes place in Rathaus (town hall) and outside on Rathausplatz, where the opening ceremonies will start at 7.30pm. It includes the appearance and several speeches of celebrities, such as Janet Jackson and Bill Clinton, as well as the traditional fashion show, which is hosted by a different designer each year. This year it will be the designers Dsquared2, 2 Canadian twin brothers who will make sure the Life Ball starts off well!

The official opening ceremony will then start inside Rathaus, with 99 young dance couples dancing the opening show. There will be lots of live acts such as Natasha Bedingfield, Holly Johnson and Hard ton, as well as international DJs such as Michael Magnan (New York).

But let’s not forget, the party is not all!! This event is a charity event and it is all about donating money to fund several national and international projects in fighting AIDS and HIV, supporting international foundations such as the Elton John AIDS foundation, UNAIDS and The Foundation for AIDS Research and national foundations such as Aids Hilfe Wien and Verein HIVmobil.

If you do not have tickets for the Life Ball, it is still worth visiting Rathausplatz, to see some of the fantastic, extravagant and also crazy costumes.
