Late Summer in Vienna (4)

by Elena Schöber

We have already reported great late summer activities in Vienna and also informed you about the international year of sustainable tourism. As this topic is really near and dear to us, we wanted to introduce a particularly beautiful hiking path this week, where you will get totally in harmony with nature – completely in line with sustainable tourism. And which point of time would be more ideal for a hiking trip than september, when the temperatures become a little bit fresher again, but the sun still bathes everything in a warm light?

The Sisi circular path

The Sisi circular path leads you on the trail of the empress for one and a half hours through the Vienna Woods. Therefore, you should optimally start at the centre of the market town Kaltenleutgeben and from there you proceed towards the Eiswiese where you will also find a great children’s playground. Subsequently, you will arrive at the baroque parish church of St. Jacob and thereupon to the Eisstockplatz where you should keep on the right. Because then, you will reach the imperial path from where you can enjoy a truly royal view over the little town. And afterwards, the route progresses over the idyllically located Gaisbergwiese and past the memorial of the empress. From there, it is not far to the highest scenic outpost, where you could either settle yourself on the grass with a self brought lunch package or stop by at the rustic Kammersteinerhütte, situated nearby. From the Franz Ferdinand cabin, you will once more be rewarded with a phenomenal sight over Vienna and Perchtoldsdorf. Finally, the path leads down towards the valley again, past former common heather, through the forest alley towards the parking.

Hiking pins

But this is only one of numerous great hiking routes in and around Vienna. For those who need an extra portion of motivation to rise from the couch and to fetch their hiking boots from the basement, we have a really special treat. Everyone who uses one of the official hiking paths can print out a hiking pass beforehand and then let their trips get confirmed. Therefore, you only have to fill in date and place at special stamp locations, which conveniently are cosy alehouses mostly. After you have absolved seven of the hiking trails, you can show your hiking pass at the City Information Centre and get awarded with the golden hiking pin in a short but solemn ceremony. If this is too much for you, you can also work your way through only three routes and already get the silver pin.

And those of you who do not only want to create their leisure time in Vienna in an eco-friendly manner, but also search for a sustainable accommodation, we can only recommend our Boutique Hotel Stadthalle. For everyone who arrives by bike or train, we even offer the Green Bonus! We are looking forward to seeing you!
