The 15th District – The Neukölln of Vienna

by Elena Schöber

Neukölln, a few years ago still the sink estate of Berlin, meanwhile has blossomed out into the newly discovered scene district. The critical reputation which has been sticking to the borough due to poverty and social disadvantages earlier, has given way to a spirit of optimism and a growing cultural importance. Today, especially young people and tourists find some sort of a smooth run-down atmosphere, new music and shops with trendy vintage furniture there. The present Neukölln is exuberant, lively and full of opposites. The 15th district of Vienna has been experiencing a quite similar transformation for some time now:

Vienna’s 15th district, has been regarded as the capital’s unbeloved stepchild in former times as it caused many negative headlines. Even so, deprived areas are always attracting artists and students as the rent is still cheap there. Hence, the poorest and youngest district is currently changing and well on the way to become as versatile and innovative as Neuköln. The Reindorfgasse is the best example for the ascent of the 15th district: it has developed from the muck corner into a creative scene and therefore into a meeting point of a young and urban audience. Between kebab booth, west station, stylish stand-up café, hipster boutique and gambling halls, life is happening! The 15th district does not only convince with its multicultural diversity, but also with its proximity to the historical city, great shopping possibilities and a good link to the public means of transport. City lovers will get their money’s worth in the bouncing quarter because everyday life here is very colourful and there is always a lot going on for sure. The city is never deserted, not even at night. Moreover, together with the citizens, a great initiative with the aim of upvaluing the “Wasserwelt” has been brought into being. As a consequence, there will be even more green, fountains and playing offers for families with children in the 15th district. Meanwhile the 15th district stands for a real quality of living and despite all still for a charming authenticity – a mixture which seems incredibly appealing, especially for young people!
