The Naschmarkt (roughly translated “nibble market”) was originally called the “Aschenmarkt” (ash market). The market has existed since the 16th century, when milk and vegetables were sold on the banks of the river Wien and has since then become a Viennese institution.
Later the river Wien was covered and at the turn of last century the traders, the so called “Standler”, moved to the market’s current location.
One hundred years ago, the Viennese strolled through the market, just like they do today, browsing for fresh fruit and vegetables that couldn’t be found cheaper or better anywhere else in Vienna. Today the traditional Naschmarkt still has a lot to offer: a unique mixture of typical Viennese humour and oriental flair, where blood-red pomegranates compete for customers with lush green Viennese cucumbers.
On Naschmarkt market you can sample everything from traditionally grilled sausages to scampi, tramezzini and kebab. Your visit to the market turns into a culinary and cultural journey around the world. The loud bargain cries of the “Standler” and the banter between stand-holders and the public is a traditional part of the scene.
This is certainly the most traditional of Vienna’s markets and has been expanded to include a farmer’s market and flea market. It has not lost any of its original charm through the 80 years of its history and is now celebrating its anniversary.
In addition you will find a whole range of restaurants and bars at the Naschmarkt and there is something to suite everyone’s tastes: from Japanese buffet or Italian Bar-B-Q specialities, pizza, pasta and fresh sea food to crepes, Greek specialities and good old Viennese cooking in the traditional coffee houses.
