“Between Beauty and Abyss”

by Elena Schöber

The Vienna Moderne around 1900 without doubt belongs to the most significant periods of art and culture worldwide. And scarcely anybody has influenced this time with their work as much as the artists Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Otto Wagner and Koloman Moser. On occasion of the century of their death, Vienna will celebrate their creative oeuvre next year which still can be seen in the metropolis today. According to the motto “Beauty and Abyss”, the area of tension between aesthetics and the horrors of the World War I which marked the turn of the century, shall be dealt with:

Klimt and Schiele

Gustav Klimt can be named the leader of a creative avant garde. In the gallery Belvedere, his paintings will be exhibited next to the works of other popular artists like Van Gogh or Monet who have demonstrably influenced him. Moreover, Klimt was a promoter of Egon Schiele, whose expressionist masterpieces can also be gazed in the Belvedere. His oil paintings will be set in a context by sketches, archive materials, related works and photographs so that the beholders can experience the time around 1900 at first hand. However, Schiele was not only a painter, but also a writer. The Leopold Museum relates his poetry to his pictures and therefore makes his impressive artistic achievements more apprehensible.

Moser and Wagner

Koloman Moser influenced the Viennese culture in many ways. As painter, graphic designer and craftsman, he was engaged in the “Wiener Werkstätte” which he himself co-founded. Mosers comprehensive work shall be exhibited in the Austrian “Museum Für Angewandte Kunst” (MAK). Finally, Otto Wagner’s architectural master strokes have shaped the Viennese cityscape essentially and can still be admired today. At the Vienna Museum, the creativity of the metropolis visionary will be interrelated with the artistic, cultural and political background at that time. Drawings, models, furnishings, paintings and personal objects will make his artistic accomplishments more palpable.

Hence, at the themed year 2018, a lot will be offered and a trip to Vienna will become a necessity for everyone who is interested in the fine arts. The manifold impressions can be perfectly digested afterwards with an espresso or a cold organic drink in the cozy garden of our Boutiquehotel Stadthalle. We are looking forward to seeing you!
