Vienna’s Biodiversity

In our last blog article, we have already introduced our extraordinary city bees and their honey to our readers. But there are many more green spaces in the middle of the city here which show an impressing biodiversity: Wienerwald Biosphere Reserve The Wienerwald which spreads over the federal states Lower Austria and Vienna, significantly contributes to the protection of ecosystems and landscapes as well as to the preservation of the ecological biodiversity. For this reason, it has been marked out as biosphere reserve by the UNESCO. As a model region for sustainability, the Wienerwald supports ecologically friendly forms of land use and a better understanding of the interactions between man and nature. With over 2.000 plant species and extremely versatile habitats, this phenomenon exemplifies how the variety of nature and culture can exist even at the edge of the city. The Viennese City Bees

That Vienna is a green city in many regards, should have become clear with our blog series “Sustainable en route in Vienna”. But did you know that about 200 million bees from more than 5.000 colonies are bustling about here during summer? Good living conditions Vienna’s numerous meadows, flowers and trees in parks, gardens, avenues, on balconies and greened rooftops provide the ideal habitat for bees with their versatile and consistent supply of food. Moreover, it stays warm longer in the city than on the countryside and there are scarcely pesticides utilised here. Hence, it is no wonder that more and more of these useful insects settle down in Austria’s capital city, sometimes even in very prominent places. For instance, you can find beehives on the roof of the Vienna State Opera and of the town hall or at the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts. Late Summer in Vienna (4)

We have already reported great late summer activities in Vienna and also informed you about the international year of sustainable tourism. As this topic is really near and dear to us, we wanted to introduce a particularly beautiful hiking path this week, where you will get totally in harmony with nature - completely in line with sustainable tourism. And which point of time would be more ideal for a hiking trip than september, when the temperatures become a little bit fresher again, but the sun still bathes everything in a warm light? The Sisi circular path The Sisi circular path leads you on the trail of the empress for one and a half hours through the Vienna Woods. Therefore, you should optimally start at the centre of the market town Kaltenleutgeben and from there you proceed towards the Eiswiese where you will also find a great children’s playground. Late Summer in Vienna (2)

Last week, we have already invited you to a romantic fullmoon boating on the Old Danube. But we have also announced that Vienna still has much more to offer, especially in September. The international appreciated Viennese wine culture can be experienced perfectly on a mild late summer’s day, for instance. This is even fun for the whole family, because also the kids will find their highlights, of course! Vienna Wine Hiking Day Truly unique for a major city, Vienna possesses more than 700 hectares of wine-growing areas - the green vegetated gardens and hills form a wonderful setting. This scenery can be perfectly explored at the traditional Wine Hiking Day. On September, the 30th from 10 to 18 o'clock you will get the chance to discover the popular Viennese wine culture on three different trails with a total distance of 25 kilometres at first hand. Bee humming in Vienna’s green living room: The gardening season is about to start

Staying in the middle of the vibrant city and in the nature at the same time? It’s springtime! Flowers are growing und we cannot wait to open our hotel garden in April. We take a deep breath, lean back, relax and enjoy the nature in our green oasis. Before the hotel door vibrant urban life is pulsing, but in the lush garden crickets are chirping, bees are humming and birds are singing.
