Zero Waste (5)

After we have revealed how you can implement this lifestyle in your kitchen with our last Zero Waste blog article, we will come to another difficult matter today: the bathroom. Do we really need numerous cosmetics in plastic tubes, phials and jars, in some cases even twice or threefold? This downright hoarding of care products is actually not only environmentally but also health damaging. Hence, it is worth trying to renounce packings and chemical ingredients, especially since many products can be easily produced by yourself. It is helpful to remember the five basic steps in order to gradually reduce waste also in the bathroom. Step one reads “Refuse” which means that we should not take little shampoo bottles from hotel rooms with us, as tempting as it might be. Moreover, we should reject synthetic contents categorically and look for plantal alternatives instead which you can often find loose in organic shops. SkinDeep helps you to identify pollutants in cosmetics. We are probably hoarding many of our beauty products mainly because the media assert us convincingly that they make us prettier, younger and slimmer. However, we should stay realistic and verify what is really true about it and, as far as [...]

Zero Waste Lifestyle (3)

As we have promised in our last Zero Waste blog article, we will provide you with details about the five basic steps that must be implemented for a garabage-free lifestyle this week: Refuse Consuming does not only mean buying actively, but also accepting certain things. This step tackles the indirect forms of consumption. No matter where we are, we get overwhelmed by one-way plastic bottles, drinking straws, cups and cutlery almost daily. Unfortunately, this plastic does not only damage our environment by releasing toxic chemicals in its production process, it often cannot even be recycled and therefore ends up in parks, forests or the sea. That is the reason why you should strictly refuse these environmental injurers and resort to sustainable alternatives. The same applies to freebies, unnecessary packagings and receipts. You also need to declare war on the annoying junk mail to lead a zero waste lifestyle.      Reduce This essential step addresses the core issues of our garbage problem. First of all, you should inspect every single object of your household for its use and eliminate everything which is not needed. Flea markets, eBay or donate organizations are a great possibility to get rid of unutilized stuff in [...]

BIO HOTELS – we are associates!

Since November 2016 we are proud associates of BIO HOTELS. Already ten years ago, hotels with a focus on sustainability have joined forces. Today the BIO HOTELS’ network consists of almost 100 hotels in seven European countries which makes it the largest association of ecological hotels. BIO HOTELS undergoes the certification of eco hotels certified to guarantee consistent standards. Guidelines and minimum standards All members of BIO HOTELS commit to lead their hotels under ecological and sustainable aspects. Concerned are foods and beverages, cosmetics and the use of energy. The foods and beverages served stem from certified ecological farms and are prepared naturally. To meet the standards all members undergo regular checks commissioned by the government voluntarily (Austria Bio Garantie in Austria). The inspectors make sure that all food products are treated carefully and processed under ecological standards. Sustainability is a big factor in the non-food segment as well. Members commit to slowly replace conventional cosmetics and detergents with ecological products. Our skin is the biggest organ of our bodies and should be treated just as good as our insides. Chemically produced detergents can flow into our ground water and are a major environmental risk. Another common objective of all members [...]

Five tips to go GREEN!

As an utterly green hotel it is our mission to act resource-friendly. With passive house design in our building extension, solar panels & co. our Boutiquehotel Stadthalle achieves a zero-energy-balance. However it is also quite simple to implement an eco-friendly lifestyle @home – often with small means. Thus, we present five useful tips to save energy in one’s own four walls. 1.    It’s the ventilation that matters Even if in winter it is uncomfortably cold it is important to ventilate intensively two times a day. Through it one can maintain a pleasant indoor climate without cooling down the apartment or house – that’s also the reason why you shouldn’t leave the windows tilted the whole day. And don’t forget: Turn down the heating while ventilation! 2.    The thing with the standby mode – you know… Yes, the standby mode on notebooks or TVs is quite handy – one touch of a button and everything is fine. But energy savers know that the tiny red-illuminating lamp is pretty much of an energy guzzler. So it would be better to pull the plugs from time to time or to even use plug connectors which can be switched off. 3.    Kettles for president […]

Sustainability is of prime importance in our green hotel in the center of Vienna. Upcycling has always been an interesting concept for us. Therefore, we want to talk about simple Upcycling Tips in our blog on a monthly basis. Upcycling refers to the repurposing of renewable objects. Today we want to give an Upcycling Tip on how to create creative furniture out of pallets – for both the exterior and the interior.
